Stress Variable Operating Limits in Brain
The brain functions through the management of stress variables, continuously balancing ongoing stress inputs with previously experienced and genetically encoded processes to maintain the “self” in a state of satisfaction, safety, and progression. However, the brain has physiological limits to handling stress inputs. When stress exceeds these limits, disorders emerge. Some brains structurally struggle to manage normal stress variables, while others are not designed to function in atypical ways.
This paper examines brain disorders arising from stress inputs beyond tolerable limits that (1) occur acutely or (2) gradually alter neural network structures. However, congenital structural abnormalities fall outside the scope of this discussion.
